Orem in Utah County

Orem is a city in Utah County, Utah. It is located in a scenic environment between the eastern coast of Utah Lake and the western mountains of the Wasatch Range. Orem is one of the main cities in Utah County and forms the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes about half a million people. Orem is situated along U.S. Route 89 and Interstate 15 and is about 10 miles away from Provo and 40 miles away from Salt Lake City.

Orem is a large and rapidly expanding suburban community that has grown into one of Utah's largest cities. Orem offers everything to residents and visitors, ranging from great municipal services and recreational opportunities to a large array of diverse businesses.

Orem features premier real estate ranging from many newly built single family homes to apartment units. The streets of Orem are full of beautiful planned residential areas surrounded by large business establishments, parks and schools, and a scenic environment.

The Orem Community Hospital is part of the Intermountain Healthcare system and offers excellent medical services, particularly in outpatient services and obstetrics and same-day surgery. Orem Community Hospital is also affiliated with Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

According to the 2000 census, Orem has a population of more than 84,000 people, making it the sixth largest city in the state of Utah. The city has a total area of 18.4 square miles with a population density of over 4,500 people per square mile. It is located at an elevation of over 4,700 feet above sea level.

The racial demographics of Orem are 90.80% White, 0.33% African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.86% Pacific Islander, 3.64% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race make up 8.56% of the population.

Orem has more than 23,000 households. The median income for a household in the city is $47,529, and the median income for a family is $51,214.

Orem is served by the excellent Alpine School District and is home to more than 20 of the district's public schools. Additionally, the city is home to and within close proximity to two major universities.

Higher Education in Orem is available at Utah Valley University, a public university that offers over 50 bachelor degree programs, 270 career-preparation programs and serves over 20,000 students. Utah Valley University is one of the largest employer's in Orem. The Brigham Young University in nearby Provo is one of the largest public universities in the United States.

Orem has plenty of recreational facilities and areas that meet interest for people all of ages.
Orem is home to two Golf Clubs; Cascade Golf Course and Sleep Ridge Golf Course, both of which include 18 hole golf course, pro shop and clubhouse. In addition to more than a dozen city parks, Orem is home to Orem Fitness Center and Scera Park Pools.

The main shopping center in Orem is the University Mall, which features more than 180 stores including department stores Macy's and Nordstrom, and multiple eateries in food court.

Utah County is located in northern Utah and is surrounded by six other counties of Tooele, Wasatch, Juab, Sanpete, Carbon, and Duchesne. Although Utah County lies about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, the county is not part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area. Rather, Utah County forms the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area, which makes the county a major center of business, culture, education, shopping, and recreation in the state of Utah.

Most of the residential communities of Utah County are located in Utah Valley, an area east of Utah Lake and west of the Wasatch Mountains. Interstate 15 cuts right through the Utah Valley, allowing convenient road access for most of the county's communities locally, as well as up north to Salt Lake City.

The light colored buildings surrounded by green foliage, mountains and Utah Lake create a stunning atmosphere that's present through most of Utah County.

According to the U.S. census of 2000, Utah County has a population of more than 368,000 people, and is rapidly growing. The county has a total area of 2,141 square miles with 143 square miles of water.

Utah County is home to more than 35 total communities, many of them cities and towns, with some unincorporated areas. The county seat is Provo, the largest city in the county and third largest city in Utah with a population of over 117,000 people. Additional large cities in Utah County include Orem, the sixth largest city in the state of Utah with over 84,000 residents.

The most notable geographical feature of Utah County is Utah Lake, largest natural freshwater lake in Utah covering 96,900 total acres right in the middle of the county. Utah Lake is a major recreational area in the county, offering water sports, including boating, sailing, water skiing, and fishing. The main marina for Utah Lake is located in Utah Lake State Park.
